Fake News: Did Joe Biden Call Trump Supporters the “Dregs of Society”?
In October 6th, 2020. Donald trump’s campaign posted a video on their twitter account showing how President Joe Biden was calling trump supporters the “Dregs of Society” as it is stated in the video, Joe Biden says “They’re a small percentage of the American people. Virulent people. Some of them the dregs of society.” But after careful examination, the media found out that people misinterpreted the whole situation.

While doing some research, there were many articles stating that Joe Biden did not call trump supporters the “Dregs of Society” such as Snopes. According to Snopes the trumps campaign found it all misleading. President Joe Biden was not referring trump supporters as “Dregs of Society” he was talking about “forces of intolerance” such as people who were involved or were part of the Ku Klux Klan and the “alt-right.” Moreover, the short video where Joe Biden talked about these misleading interpretations were taken from a speech that was given in September 15, 2018, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Where he was discussing a Human rights campaign, an LGBTQ rights non-profit. Therefore, he did not call trump supporters this name, he was referring to “forces of intolerance.”
To Continue, the false claim that Biden had described Trump’s supporters as “the dregs of society” can be refuted with some research. The speech that Joe Biden had at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. can prove that he was not talking about trump supporters in this case. The original speech that he gave about the human rights of the LGTBQ community was 26 minutes long; Whereas the video that was taken from twitter it was a small clip of eight seconds where Joe Biden only stated “They’re a small percentage of the American people. Virulent people. Some of them the dregs of society.” the short clip does not really have a lot of background information because it was only an eight second video; this can be a reason why people misinterpreted what he said, because it was only a small portion from what he originally said in the speech.
In conclusion, the media can be helpful to find news and new things that people do not now about, but we have to be careful what we believe in, because some of the news that go around can be fake most of the time. The media can be really manipulative and make you believe things that are not real, like in this case where Joe Biden called trump supporters “Dregs of Society” but it was all a false accusation made by a twitter account of a trump campaign. Therefore, when you see news that do not quite seem realistic, make sure you do your research first, instead of sharing it around all social media. People deserve to know the truth about everything that happens in the United States everyday; so instead of spreading lies, share good content that people would actually believe in.
